Catherine Breillat is a French filmmaker, born on July 13, 1948, in Bressuire, France. From the age of 12, she wanted to become a writer and director and at age 17, she left her strict Catholic home and went to Paris, where she wrote her first novel, The Light Man. Her books and films are often characterized by explicit representations of sexuality, which often sparks controversial debates, in addition to being considered an auteur filmmaker, whose films are mostly based on a novel she wrote herself or on an adaptation of a novel. She is known for directing films such as Romance (1999), Una vieille maitresse (2007) and Abus de faiblesse (2013), in addition to returning to directing, after a decade of absence, with the film L’été dernier (2023).
