Daniel Northcott is a free-spirited documentary filmmaker with an insatiable curiosity about people and cultures. Born in 1980 in Campbell River, Canada, Daniel was raised with his sister Erin in Vancouver by parents Tanya and Tom. From an early age, Daniel saw the world differently, finding meaning and beauty in everyday things. His family recognized his creative eye and gave him a video camera at age 7, helping Daniel channel his passion for filming nature and asking profound questions about humanity. .

Daniel’s sense of adventure and wanderlust has led him to make unique choices in life, such asdropped out of high school a month before graduationteaching English abroad in Taiwan. This experience brought Daniel and Erin closer together as they worked locally to support themselves and traveled when possible. In 2000, Daniel embarked on an eight-year global backpacking journey to reconnect humanity by revealing that we are all the same at our core, regardless of beliefs, values or preferences.

Armed with his trusty video camera, Daniel has ventured to more than 42 countries and 100 islands across every continent, amassing a collection of travel charms such as crystals, gifts, engravings, and gifts. engraving and more. That was until a fateful trip to Mexico in 2008. Daniel traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula to explore an ancient Mayan cave containing the remains of sacrificial rituals.Despite warnings not to touch the offerings, Daniel couldn’t resist pocketing a small calcified stone ball as a souvenir. This souvenir will be his last.

Within months of getting the stone, Daniel was diagnosed with leukemia on July 11, 2008. He began aggressive chemotherapy the next day, not wanting to give up at such a young age. However, after three failed treatments and no hope of a transplant, Daniel could only live 3-6 months.

Instead of constantly going to the hospital,Daniel chose to immerse himself in nature one last timeand efforts to return the stone to its original resting place in Mexico. He ran out of time to search before sadly passing away from cancer on June 20, 2009 at just 29 years old.

According to his wishes, Daniel was buried in a shroud in the middle of nature, surrounded by his travel collections, with only a modest stone marking the spot. More than 1,475 hours of his self-filmed footage survive under Erin’s care, along with one request: to complete the existential documentary he began at age 7.

Although Daniel’s bright light was extinguished too soon, in his short life he lived more adventures than many people do in their entire lives. Over eight years spanning five continents, Daniel pursued his purpose of exploring our human connections with each other. Although the mysteries of the Maya stone he collected and its legendary curse remain, Daniel remains true to himself until the end and makes the most of his days by touching the souls around the world, leaving ripples of his one-of-a-kind passion. .
