The UN General Assembly approved a non-binding resolution calling for a humanitarian truce in Gaza, making it the first United Nations response to the war. The 193-member world body adopted the resolution by a vote of 120-14 with 45 abstentions which calls for an “immediate, durable and sustainable humanitarian truce” between Israel and Hamas while demanding unhindered aid access to Gaza Strip. The resolution also calls for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all civilians held captive and condemns attacks on both Palestinian and Israeli civilians. “It sends a message to everyone, enough is enough,” Palestinian UN ambassador Riyad Mansour said after the decision. “This war has to stop, the carnage against our people has to stop and humanitarian assistance should begin to enter the Gaza strip,” Mansour added. Israel’s UN Ambassador’s Gilad Erdan’s comment on the vote was that it is “a day that will go down in infamy”. “Israel will not stop the operation until Hamas terror capabilities are destroyed and our hostages are returned. … And the only way to destroy Hamas is root them out of their tunnels and subterranean city of terror,” Erdan added. What do you make of the UN’s resolution?
