His legacy of love, dedication, and warmth will forever be etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Gary’s life began on May 10, 1945, in Decatur, IL, as the son of Clarence and Audrey Hart. He was raised in the heart of a close-knit family and graduated from San Rafael High School in 1963. It was during this time that he met his soulmate, Norma Jean Hawkins, at Niantic-Harristown High School. Their journey together spanned an incredible 59 years, marked by unwavering love and devotion.

A memorial service in celebration of Gary’s life will be held on December 27, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Decatur, IL. The family warmly invites friends to join them in honoring Gary’s memory on this day.

Throughout his life, Gary was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his surviving family: his wife Norma Jean; sons Terry (Michelle) Hart and Todd (Angie) Hart; and eight cherished grandchildren: Tad, Sophia, Gracie, Keaton, Corbin, Chloe, London, and Sophie. Gary’s siblings, Mary (Bob) Underwood, Ralph (Caroline) Hart, Ernie (June) Hart, and Kay (Jack) Hinton, also mourn his passing.

Gary dedicated nearly 30 years of his professional life to Caterpillar, forging lasting friendships and leaving an indelible mark on the company. He was an active member and Deacon of various Baptist Churches in Decatur, including Tabernacle Baptist Church.

In his leisure, Gary found joy in his garage, where he could often be found tinkering with cars and carpentry projects. A passionate sports enthusiast, he delighted in cheering for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and following Fighting Illini Basketball. However, his greatest joy came from spending precious moments with his family, creating lasting memories that will endure.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Audrey, and siblings Bobby Hart, Linda (Dan) Cole, June (Jerry) English, Joan Jones, and James (Marty) Hart.
