Born in La Grulla, Texas, on September 16, 1926, to Matias Zarate and Martha Perez Zarate, Hortencia’s life was marked by resilience, love, and familial bonds. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband +Fidel Romero, and her sons +Refugio Contreras, +Onesimo Zarate, and +Leandro Tanguma.
Hortencia is survived by her loving children: Eliberto Contreras, Hortencia Contreras, Flora Guevara, Ismael Flores, Juana Martínez, Zoilo Flores, Guadalupe Pena, Sylvia Medélez, and Sylvina Villarreal. Additionally, she leaves behind a legacy of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Hernandez Funeral Home of Rio Grande City has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements, a responsibility they undertake with the utmost care. The Romero family invites relatives and friends to join them in a celebration of faith in remembrance of Hortencia’s life.
Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects on Friday, December 22, 2023, from 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm, with a Rosary ceremony to be prayed at 6:00 pm. The viewing will continue on Saturday, December 23, 2023, from 8:00 am to 9:30 am.
A Holy Mass, a sacred tribute to Hortencia’s life, will be conducted at 10:00 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in La Grulla. Following the Mass, a poignant moment of farewell, the burial, will take place at Los Solis’ Cemetery at 11:00 am.
