Los Angeles police have identified Jalil Sosa Illera, 27, as the victim in a fatal stabbing that occurred on a Metro E Line train Tuesday afternoon. Sosa Illera was transported to a nearby hospital after being stabbed, but eventually succumbed to his injuries. The violent attack shocked the Los Angeles community and disrupted Metro rail service as the investigation continued.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the stabbing occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the LATTC/Ortho Institute subway station located at 2400 S. Flower Street. The station is located near the intersection of Flower Street and Adams Avenue in the University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Police arrived and found Sosa Illera suffering from at least one stab wound. Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital where he died.
Due to the ongoing investigation, Metro has suspended E Line train service in the vicinity of the attack. Trains are returning at Pico or Jefferson stations and are temporarily not continuing to other destinations. Metro officials said the service interruption allowed police officers and detectives to secure access to the Chinatown station, where the deadly attack on the train occurred.
Police have released a description of the suspect wanted in connection with the stabbing as the hunt continues. He is described as a white or Hispanic male, approximately 25-30 years old, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing approximately 120 pounds. The suspect was last seen wearing a black pullover with white lettering on the front, light blue pants, black shoes and glasses. Investigators are not speculating on any motive for the deadly attack at this stage of the investigation.
The brutal daylight murder of Sosa Illera has raised concerns about safety on Los Angeles’ public transportation system. While violent attacks are relatively rare on Metro trains and buses, several high-profile incidents over the past few years have placed a new focus on security and crime prevention efforts. LAPD and Metro security forces will need to work diligently to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
Family members, friends and community activists are mourning Jalil Sosa Illera after his life was tragically cut short. The seemingly random and unprovoked attack is even more puzzling. There are no words that can properly describe the grief. As the hunt for the killer continues, we should take a moment to remember him and his contributions throughout his 27 years of life. Sosa Illera deserved much better than the terrible fate that befell him on the LA subway one fateful Tuesday afternoon. You can rest in peace.
