Community Mourns Loss of Retired Officer Who Always Led with Heart

A beloved father, coach, and public servant’s sudden passing has cast a pall over Massachusetts communities still grappling to comprehend the gutting loss of a local leader. On December 13th, Richard J. Sims Sr. – a retired Peabody police sergeant and ever-present father to renowned fitness instructor Jess Sims – died unexpectedly at age 67, shocking grieving family members and former colleagues.

A lifelong North Shore resident, Rick Sims poured his heart into lifting up others across roles as a dedicated officer, steadfast single dad, and eventual small business owner once hanging up the badge. But those closest to him point to the unwavering support he shone on his three kids as his proudest legacy. Despite working tireless hours patrolling Peabody’s streets, he never missed a game, recital, or formative moment across their childhoods.

“From the time I started playing basketball at six years old, my father never missed a game,” Jess reflected with admiration. “When I was on the team at Trinity College, he would leave work and drive two hours from Massachusetts to the Connecticut campus to see me play. He always stuck around after the game and then turned around and headed home to start his shift at his second job.” Indeed, Rick Sims’ selfless commitment towards empowering his family and community seemed to know no bounds.

His lifelong public safety career began as a Lynn police cadet before signing on with Peabody PD in 1974. Over nearly 30 years of service, Rick earned promotion to Sergeant in 1997 and widespread reputation as an officer who led with compassion and relationship-building as much as law and order. He had a knack for defusing tensions and forging bonds across neighborhoods through simple kindness.

And even in retirement after hanging up the badge, that community-focused spirit endured as the backbone of the family painting business he launched. It also shone brightest on sidelines and in bleachers where he nurtured daughter Jess and others to dream big.

He was the person I could ask for feedback on how I played, and the one I could practice with on the little half-court in our backyard,” Jess reminisced. “My dad was the one who would tell me: ‘Shoot the ball, and be confident in it.’” In that unyielding belief he instilled now echoes out as Jess urges the world to keep believing in their own potential.

Of course, his loss leaves an immense void across Massachusetts circles and within a family always able to count on their beloved patriarch. But through Jess and all who Rick Sims uplifted in life, his memory carries on as a guiding light during trying times. One nudging us to lead and to love as selflessly as he did each day.

The journey ahead holds sorrow and seasons to mourn. But Rick Sims’ spirit persisting in the people and places he served now transforms grief into renewed purpose. Perhaps there is no greater way to honor such an exceptional life than striving to lift up others with that same generosity and care. For a public servant who poured his heart into his family, that’s the type of legacy that truly never dies.
