A proud Marine, he served his country with distinction, completing two tours in Vietnam and dedicating 20 years of his life to military service across the globe. His unwavering dedication and sense of duty were evident in his contributions to various missions and his steadfast commitment to upholding the values of the Marine Corps.

Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, LaKelver transitioned seamlessly into another form of service, this time focusing on the betterment of his community. He channeled his passion for mentorship and support for youth by actively participating in numerous youth organizations. His dedication to mentoring young minds and fostering a sense of community empowerment left an indelible mark on the lives of many.

LaKelver’s legacy is further defined by the loving relationships he cultivated throughout his life. At the center of his heart was his best friend and wife, Mary Butler of Cedar Point. Together, they shared a bond that withstood the test of time. His influence extended to “The Girls” – Lola McDonald (Clifford), Shammara Jones (Antaine), LaKelli Butler, and Petrice Fox (Alexander), as well as his sons, Deion Sutton (Tara) and John Humphrey (Kimberly).

The vast network of siblings, including Floyd, Peggie, Linda (Leroy), Lionel (Janie), Mary Beth (Arthur), Lonnie, and Ginger (Albert), attests to the strong family ties that shaped LaKelver’s life. Beyond his immediate family, he leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, special nieces and nephews who affectionately call him “Unc,” countless cousins, and numerous friends.
