Born on August 23, 1929, in Gracious, Azores, Portugal, Laurinda was the daughter of Jesuina and Manuel Silva. Her roots in Portugal shaped her early years, and in 1971, she embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to the United States and settling in Lowell’s Back Central Street Neighborhood. Laurinda became an integral part of St. Anthony’s Church, where she actively participated in the community.
For Laurinda, family and faith were the cornerstones of her life. She found immense joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren, particularly relishing the moments she spent cooking for them. Alongside her passion for cooking, she was an avid knitter. While she had worked for Paris Shoe and Carol Shoe in the Lowell Mills during her earlier years, her true calling and life’s work were being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Surviving Laurinda are her son, John Silva, and daughter, Isabel Fidalgo, along with their spouses. Her beloved grandchildren, Natalie Fidalgo, Calvin, Evan Silva, and the late grandson Jason, were the lights of her life. Laurinda is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and four sisters-in-law: Rosa Espinola, Maria Horta, Durvalina Silva, and Maria N. Silva. She was the last surviving sibling of the Silva family and was predeceased by her brothers-in-law Manuel Silva, Joao Silva, Alexandrinho Silva, Saleotino Silva, and Edelberto Horta. She is also predeceased by her sisters-in-law Georgina T. Silva and Maria N. Silva.
A visitation to honor Laurinda’s memory will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2023, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell, with burial at St. Mary Cemetery.
