The life of a beloved auto mechanic came to an abrupt end this week, leaving his family and community devastated.Michael Gayhart, 36, of West Elkton was pronounced dead at the scene after a horrific car accident Monday morning. The head-on collision also claimed the life of Preble County Deputy Sheriff Josh Hamilton, 34 years old. Now, friends and neighbors in West Elkton are rallying to support Gayhart’s grieving family during an unimaginably painful time.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Gayhart and Hamilton collided fatally along Highway 503 under circumstances that are still under investigation. But those painful details hardly matter to those who loved the deceased mechanic, known for his skill, altruism and generous heart.
Longtime friend Frank Napier was expecting to meet Gayhart at their auto shop at 4 a.m. Monday morning for work when fate horribly intervened. After hearing sirens on the way, Napier later discovered that his close colleague had been killed in an accident on his way.
Still reeling from the surreal loss, Napier shared: “He was always at the store waiting for me…I met him at the store at 4 a.m. He is a selfless person.” That sense of dedication and trustworthiness visually described Gayhart to friends and family.
Napier has established a GoFundMe campaign to help Gayhart’s bereaved family shoulder funeral expenses and other financial burdens during this difficult time. The local Marathon gas station also set up a donation jar to ease the family’s deep hardship. Employees noted that Gayhart’s mother had worked there.
In addition to the heavy mental losses, there are also urgent practical needs after the tragedy. As West Elkton rallies behind the Gayharts, a grieving mother must come to terms with the shocking loss of a son while being able to comfort Gayhart’s two young children who are fatherless.
As a demolition derby enthusiast, Gayhart became involved with many people in the local racing community. His car proudly displays the “355” badge, commemorating a humble man now immortalized by the many lives he touched.
Friend Shawn Hake lamented the community-shocking passing of “a young local man” who was suddenly taken away from his loving family and friends. Napier agrees that Gayhart’s passing leaves a huge void: “This is heartbreaking… he had the biggest heart.”
The coming days will reveal more about the circumstances that caused the horrific accident that left two people dead. But shedding light on potential factors such as weather, road conditions and other variables can offer little solace.
The West Elkton family, group of friends and wider community will forever feel Michael Gayhart’s absence following his untimely death. But the beloved mechanic left behind a legacy of altruism, skill and devotion to others. Those qualities of courage will hopefully help those grieving through the long, painful days of adapting to daily life without their precious fathers, sons, colleagues and friends.
