WALLINGFORD, CT — (From Wallingford Funeral Home): David VanDerMaelen Sr., 74, beloved husband of Evelyn (Kammerer) VanDerMaelen for 54 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain with his family by his side, following his courageous battle with cancer. He was born in New Haven on October 29, 1949, a son of the late John and Mildred (Ambrose) VanDerMaelen.

David had a long, successful 34-year career with Amtrak Railroad, retiring in 2011, where he made many memories and lifelong friends.

In addition to his beloved wife, David is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David and Lisa VanDerMaelen Jr., of North Haven; his grandchildren, Joey, Matthew, Alyssa, Stephen, and Jenna; and his brother, Roger VanDerMaelen of Alabama; as well as extended family members and cherished friends. He will also be survived by his highly anticipated great-grandchildren who will both be arriving in January 2024, Paisley and Elijah, whom he already loved dearly. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Michael A. VanDerMaelen.

David’s family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., on Sunday, December 17 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A celebration of his life will then begin at 4 p.m.
