WALLINGFORD, CT — (From Wallingford Funeral Home): Having been separated by death from his beloved bride Eileen in August, Dr. Jack Nicholas Herrle (OD) went to join her on December 12, 2023. The reuniting of long-time Wallingford residents Jack and Eileen, after nearly 70 years of marriage, heartens those of us left behind.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on July 11th, 1925, Jack Herrle lived his life of 98 years as a beacon of strength for his family, his community, and his country. Jack was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism in combat in World War II and then continued on to serve in the Medical Corp. in the Korean War.

Back in the States, Jack graduated from Columbia University with his Doctor of Optometry degree and served the Wallingford and Meriden communities with compassion and love for 67 years. Dr. Herrle finally retired at the age of 95 only due to the ravages of the 2020 pandemic. His patients adored him and the tenures of his office staff were measured not in years, but in decades.

As a husband and father, Jack took to those roles as he did all others – with a combination of conscientiousness, warmth and determination to be the absolute best he could be. Provider. Protector. Nurturer. Supporter. Cheerleader. Jack could be whatever he needed to be at any given time and his family benefitted from every aspect.

Pre-deceased by his wife and his brother Richard Herrle, it’s the rest of us who are left devastated. Jack leaves behind 6 children, Kenneth, Jan, Carol, Ruth, Ann, and Paul as well as their spouses. Jack was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
