Joseph Ernest Blier

MADISON – Joseph Ernest Blier, 90, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at Maplecrest Rehabilitation & Living Center in Madison, Maine. He entered his heavenly home surrounded by his children as they sang his favorite hymns.

Born in Rumford, Maine on September 21, 1933, Joe was the son of the late Emile and Josephine (Peters) Blier. Joe spent his formative years in Rumford and Lewiston, Maine. After attending High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as a medic in Korea. After serving, Joseph returned to Lewiston, Maine where he worked as an orderly at CMMC (CMG) and met his wife, Gloria. The two were married in her childhood home in Madison on March 13, 1955.

After marrying, Joe and Gloria moved back to Madison to start a family. Joe was a volunteer on the Madison Fire Department and held many careers over the years, but one of his most loved positions was as a part-time Pastor at the First Baptist Church on Paris Hill, where he remained for many years. The only job Joe may have loved more was his school bus driving— he drove a school bus for the Oxford Hills School District, and then later for the Madison School District when he and Gloria moved back to her childhood home. He remained a school bus driver until he finally, and reluctantly, retired at the age of 78.

Joe loved being involved with the community, attending as many sports games as he could, and he both loved and was loved by the students he drove.

Joe’s family will always remember how deeply he loved, how loudly he laughed, how determined he was to help others, and how talented he was at building kayaks, canoes, remote-controlled airplanes and walking sticks.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Gloria, their six children: Jerry, Cathy and her husband Bruce, Ellen, Mike and his wife, Linda, Lori and her husband Robert and Becky and her husband Robert. He also leaves behind his brother, Edward, along with eleven grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Joseph was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Gerard, Emile, and Edmund; and his sisters Delia and Noella.

Upon Joseph’s request, there will be no funeral but instead a celebration of life for family in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
