The untimely death of spiritual director Fr. Jeff Huard has left a pall over the community, with many mourning the loss of a renowned clergyman.

Reverend Jeffrey Huard, a staunch figure from Duluth, Minnesota, died on Friday at the age of 68, a great loss for those who appreciated his unrelenting commitment to spiritual growth.

“Losing our brother, colleague, mentor, and friend is deeply saddening, yet we remain profoundly grateful for his profound impact on the seminary and the broader community over the past 14 years,” said Saint Paul Seminary Rector Father Joseph Taphorn, echoing sentiments shared by many touched by Fr. Huard’s profound contributions. The reason for this unexpected loss is unknown.

Huard, who was born in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1955, completed his studies at The Saint Paul Seminary and was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 1994. He was the seminary’s director of spiritual formation from 2009 to 2021, and he was known for his strong dedication to spiritual guidance.

Even after standing down from this position of leadership, Fr. Huard continued to provide regular spiritual guidance to seminarians until his tragic death.

Throughout his ministry, he acted as a spiritual father figure to many seminarians and priests, providing constant advice and support.

Fr. Huard worked as a parochial vicar at All Saints Parish in Lakeville (1994-1997), chaplain at the Community of Christ the Redeemer in West St. Paul (1996-1999), director of campus ministry at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul (1999-2007), and pastor at St. Mark Parish in St. Paul (2007-2009).

He was a member of the Companions of Christ priestly fraternity and served as its moderator.

Fr. Huard’s legacy is marked by an unwavering devotion to spiritual enrichment and pastoral care in the communities he touched.
