In a tragic incident that has shaken the community, 26-year-old footballer Samuel Wilson, known as Sam or Willow to his friends, was fatally struck by a van in the early hours of Saturday, December 16. The accident occurred on Market Place, and despite immediate attempts to rescue him, Wilson succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Two other men involved in the incident were taken to hospital for treatment and are currently recovering at home. The tragic event has left the community in mourning, with heartfelt tributes pouring in for the young man described as “talented, loving, and handsome”.
The Wilson family released a statement, vividly painting a picture of Sam’s character and passions. “Samuel William Wilson tragically died while out for his football team’s annual Christmas celebration,” they said. “Our talented number 12 team player did not have one bad bone in his body. He had a kind, caring, gentle nature which was something everyone loved about him.”
A keen Derby County supporter, Wilson was also an animal lover, a regular gym-goer, and a passionate cook with a strong interest in health and wellness. The family emphasized his strong bond with his girlfriend, describing them as “inseparable” and “true soul mates”.
